Scent is a mechanic in The Isle that allows all dinosaurs to find food or water.
Scent was added with the release of the game.
Information[]
Scent can be used by both Herbivores and Carnivores. For Herbivores, it can be used to find edible plants and water, while for Carnivores it can be used to find tracks, blood, ribs, or water.
How to Use:[]
To use Scent, hold down the Q key. It takes 10 seconds for the effect to take place, or 3 seconds if you're walking.
Notice: Scent does not work while it is raining.
Finding Water[]
Lakes or other static water sources will glow bright blue, whether its day or night. Lakes will light up an opaque cyan color and will be visible through solids, so you can find them even if they're blocked by trees or mountains.
Rivers, however, do not currently have this opaque feature, but they will still glow bright blue. Therefore, it can be frustrating when you're walking towards a lake in the distance, not even aware that a river can be only a few hundred feet away.
Finding Food[]
For Herbivores, edible plants will glow bright green.
For Carnivores, ribs will glow bright red.

With Scent active, a compass appears on the top of the screen. This compass has North and South highlited, while East and West will highlite if you are pointing in that direction. The compass is useful for navigating if you have a map or if you happen to know which direction to go in.
This Interactive Map allows for easy navigation through all the playable maps in The Isle. Use the compass on the map and the compass in Scent to allow for easy navigation. For more precise navigation, use coordinates, which you can access in the Character Menu.(Esc -> Character)
Tracking[]
For Carnivores, dinosaur tracks will glow bright yellow, and small puffs of yellow smoke will rise from them so they're visible in tall grass.
When a dinosaur walks, they only produce about 1 or 2 visible tracks per 15 steps, but if they sprint, then they are producing 1 visible track per every 3 steps.(This is a rough estimate) It would be wise to not sprint much when you are being hunted.
If a dinosaur is bleeding, its blood pools will also glow bright red, allowing for easy tracking. Dinosaurs like Dilophosaurus benefit the most from this, with the best night vision in the game, they can easily track foot prints and blood pools.
With Night Vision active, all tracks are visible without using Scent.
